Scooters are all the rave these days and I have tried one out a few times now. With seeing them so much lately, it got me thinking – is it worth it to get one myself? What are the main pros and cons of electric scooters, and how important is it to consider both sides before buying one?
Just like with any rental service, it will always be cheaper to buy the thing yourself than to constantly rent it. So, for example, if you use a scooter almost daily, you will surely save some money if you simply buy your own electric scooter.
So I did a little bit of my own research and here’s what I discovered.
Pros of having your own electric scooter
Main pros of having your own scooter lay in saving money and, of course, getting to places in your own time – very fast, in fact.
Saves you money in the long term
Electric scooters can save you some money in the long term if you plan on using them daily.
Although I do have to say that electric scooters are not the cheapest gadgets to have in your posession. They, just like any electric devices, come in a pretty wide range of prices. However you can get a good scooter for around 400-500 EUR. There are also professional models as well as luxurious brands that sell electric scooters for more than a 1000 EUR.
And even then, in the long term – for sure pays off. Unless they invent something super new and exciting that could replace electric scooter in the next few years. Which, as if right now, doesn’t seem likely to me.
Fast transportation
The best part about electric scooters is that they are fast. Some are faster, some are slower, but even the slowest ones can’t be compared to walking by foot. Besides, it is so fun to ride a scooter and feel like a kid again. Only this time there’s no need to waste any energy because the electric adjustments do it for you.
Some scooters can even go as fast as 60km per hour which is insane. No more being late for your work meetings or appointments.
Good for our climate
Electric scooters are also good for our climate, as all electric things seem to be. It is far better than driving your own car. And although taking a bus is better than driving a car, choosing scooter is ten times better than that.
Fresh air
If the climate pro wasn’t convincing enough for you, think about yourself. Driving to your destination – being fast and breathing fresh air as you go. Now that is a great benefit of having your own scooter that takes you places.
Cons of electric scooters
As all things do, electric scooters are no exceptions to some cons. They can be dangerous in a variaty of ways if you do not do your research properly.
Need to constanly charge it
The biggest con is that your scooter will work on a battery, which means you will have to constantly charge it. And it might disappoint you at the wrong times – just like your phone might do.
Therefore this purchase will take some planning for you. You will have to charge your scooter during the night so it’s as good as new and ready to go in the morning when you’re ready. Charging times can go from 3 up to 12 hours, so make sure to check that before choosing the scooter.
Be careful with the range
Just as important it is to check out the battery, it is important to see just how far the scooter will be able to take you based on one charged battery. That way you will be able to tell if the scooter will easily be able to take you to work and back, going through shop or a park on your way.
Some scooters are made for commuting and they have a wider range of distance. However some are made solely for entertainment so their range is quite small, only of a few kilometres.
Not all electric scooters are rain proof
What came as a surprise to me while doing my research, turns out not every scooter is waterproof. This fact completely blows my mind because all outdoor electric devices for sure must be water proof in case of rain. Turns out they aren’t.
Only a few scooters are rain proof. Therefore it is super important to consider this factor in your place of location. If you live in a sunny California, you might be fine. However if your climate is more similar to Ireland or England, you better be checking out some water proof scooter models.
Can be dangerous
And lastly, scooters can be very fast and therefore very dangerous. It all depends on how qualified you feel to drive one. That is upon yourself to decide however woth mentioning before you go and buy one.
