Despite the fact that bananas grow in far-flung hot Africa, for many of us this fruit has become a favorite snack. I am no different however lately there has been some talk about different kinds of vegetables and fruits – is banana a berry or a fruit? For example, did you know that a tomato is considered a berry?

Bananas make very tasty desserts, you can use them as a filling for sweets, cakes and pastries, and even prepare salads with them. We seem to know everything about them, but at the same time, many are wondering, “Is a banana a fruit or a berry?” In this article I aim to find out the truth.

Bananas don’t grow on trees

Most lovers of bananas tend to take the first option – it is a fruit, believing that the banana grows on the trees, but this is a misconception.

You may often hear the question, “Is a banana a vegetable or a fruit?” The question itself is incomprehensible and incorrectly asked. If we consider what it is the bananas grow on – is it a tree, a shrub or a herbaceous plant? If you classify what exactly is a banana: fruit, berry or vegetable, then you need to choose the second version.

Many people believe that bananas grow on palm trees, but this is a mistake. Some people call these plants “banana trees,” although they have nothing in common with trees.

Fruit or a berry?

If you look closely, bananas can grow on bushes or trees. Only berries can grow on bushes. Due to the strange appearance, there is always a mixed feeling when it comes to bananas. They can’t be berries, right?

Many people think that a banana is a fruit or a vegetable, because one plant can bear fruit for up to 100 years. However it still has to die every year and then be reborn. On the so-called “banana tree” there is no wood fiber, which means it isn’t really a tree. Only one crop can be harvested from one stalk per year, after which it dies. The following year, a new stem rises from the rhizome, which grows again and bears fruit.

And yet it is not clear to many: a banana is a fruit or a berry because the fruit is very difficult to classify.

Conclusion

People have been cultivating bananas for more than a hundred years, there are whole plantations of them. The banana itself is sterile, so it is not possible to grow anything from the seeds inside. The debate over whether a banana is a fruit or a berry can be considered closed, given that its fruit does not grow on trees. Only berries can grow on the bushes.

For a long time, the banana was considered a fruit that grows on a palm tree, but in nature there is no “banana tree”. It is just a huge bush that resembles it. If we consider that only berries can appear on the bush, it becomes clear what our favorite banana is.
